Neil Dyer’s popular old Victorian galloper Hawks Bay will vie for successive victories in the Darwin Cup 2012 next month, the 50-start veteran topping the nominations and weights for the classic which will run at Fannie Bay Racecourse on Monday August 6, 2012.
It will be the fourth straight year the now six-year-old Black Hawk gelding from Kyneton contests the $185,000 Carlton Mid Darwin Cup (2000m) which is the headline event of the annual Darwin Cup Carnival up in the Northern Territory.
In 2009 Hawks Bay ran a brave second to Activation on the back of a winning double in the Darwin Guineas – NT Derby.
The next year they were the Darwin Cup runner-up again this time going down by a mere nose to Shout Out Loud in the 2010 edition.
They finally broke their Darwin Cup duck in 2011 however with Hawks Bay blitzing their rivals with a big four length victory.
If successful in defending their title on Monday week Hawks Bay will become just the fifth horse in 50 years to win dual Darwin Cups joining Wood who won four times on the trot in the early 1960’s, Lord Tiny (1975-76), Kerr Street (1983-84) and Lothaway County who won in 1994 before dead heating in 1995.
A growing cult figure in the Darwin racing scene Hawks Bay certainly has the form to enter the history books having won their past two races.
After a second to Linton in the Group 3 RA Lee Stakes (1600m) at Morphettville in May they returned to Fannie Bay and won the Roant Gold Cup (1300m) on June 30 and the Chief Minister’s Cup (1600m).
It is still a tough ask however with Hawks Bay allocated the hefty 64.5kg topweight of the 16 Darwin Cup 2012 nominees, two and a half kilos more than their winning weight from 12 months ago.
They will have a final tune-up this Saturday when they run in the $47,500 Metric Mile (1600m) in Darwin, the traditional Darwin Cup lead-up race.
Last year’s Darwin Cup runner-up Palmyra Boy and third placed Blackbriar are also both set to face off with Hawks Bay in the feature again this season allocated 57kg and 59kg respectively.
Both horses are also among the entries for the Metric Mile which will feature a very similar line-up to the 2012 Darwin Cup field.
Other notable horses among the Darwin Cup nominations include the former Chris Waller-trained Syreon, 2008 Darwin Cup winner Club Liquid, Victoria Cup champ at Caulfield in February Bolton, recent Fannie Bay winner over the mile Sheahan, last Saturday’s Buntine Handicap champ Glare and promising Grandera three-year-old The Third Baseman.
