Early favourite Extra Zero will have to get his winning form back on track in time for the 2013 Darwin Cup, after failing to perform in the Metric Mile last start.
Extra Zero had been favourite to win the Metric Mile and the 2013 Darwin Cup ahead of last weekend’s race, where he finished a disappointing eighth of nine runners.
Stable foreman Gary Fennessy had been confident about Extra Zero’s chances going into Saturday’s $50,000 Metric Mile at Fannie Bay Racecourse.
“He’s improved on what he looked like in Melbourne, he’s certainly appreciated the warmer weather,” Fennessy told NT News prior to the race.
“He has had time to acclimatise – he arrived in town on July 5 and has had a couple of nice gallops leading into this race.
“They say you’ve got to have a run on the track, so we’re hoping this run will top him off nicely for the Cup, which is the main aim for him.”
With his last start run being well below par, Extra Zero will now rely on a potential partnership with jockey Nash Rawiller in the 2013 Darwin Cup to see him to the line.
Metric Mile winner Spartan Eagle is now well backed to take out the 2013 Darwin Cup next Monday August 5, 2013.
Spartan Eagle has won eight of his 28 race starts and has earned more than $145,000 in prize money during his horse racing career.
