Trainer Neil Dyer is confident that Hawks Bay is capable of winning his third straight Darwin Cup at Fannie Bay Racecourse next Monday August 5, 2013.
Hawks Bay finished seventh of nine runners in the $51,000 Metric Mile at the same track last start and Dyer is confident he can bounce back in time for the Cup.
The Black Hawk gelding finished sixth in last year’s edition of the race, before bouncing back to post his second Darwin Cup win.
Dyer is hopeful the running of the 2013 Darwin Cup will play out better for Hawks Bay than his luckless last start.
“He got caught in without a lot of galloping room and, as we know, at Fannie Bay you’ve got to get rolling a long way out,” Dyer told the Heraldsun.
Hawk’s Bay has failed to win a race since his last Darwin Cup win 12 months ago, with his best result being a third placing in an $80,000 handicap at Flemington in May this year.
The rising eight-year-old has won 14 of his 58 race starts and has earned more than $850,000 in prize money during his horse racing career.
Hawks Bay will have to contend with the competition of Metric Mile winner and Darwin Cup favourite Spartan Eagle should he want to win the $200,000 race.
Spartan Eagle has won his past four race starts by convincing margins and will be out to claim his fifth straight victory in the 2013 Darwin Cup.
