A capacity field of 12 runners have been confirmed to line up for this afternoon’s featured Darwin Cup (2000m), offering punters exceptional value from a betting point of view and several key opportunities to place a winning bet.
Having returned to racing in exceptional form this season, Smarty Mac has opened as and maintained favouritism for success in the 2014 Darwin Cup and has so far received the greatest market share of wagers, cutting in to a current quote of $4.20, ahead of Cantonese ($5.50), Lightinthenite ($6.50) and Saturday Sorcerer ($7).
Will Smarty Mac justify his resounding support and win the 2014 Darwin Cup, or will one of his talented rivals find the line in the clear?
Royal Request ($7.50)
Securing a total of three wins and three minor places from just 13 competitive starts so far, Royal Request has returned to racing in arguably career-best form this season and is more than worth consideration for a wager in the Darwin Cup. Charging home to win the Darwin RSL Handicap (1300m) first-up on June 21st, the Bel Esprit gelding was unlucky to be blocked for a run in the final straight and second by a nose in the Darwin Guineas (1600m) on July 5th, but will carry winning form into the Darwin Cup after strolling home to win the NT Derby (2000m) last time out. Royal Request will have to overcome the slightly wide barrier 11 in the 2014 Darwin Cup but is likely to settle in ideal position from the wide draw.
Smarty Mac ($4.20)
Arguably the top-end’s most consistent runner currently in work, Smarty Mac has secured a total of seven wins and 12 minor places from 34 competitive starts so far, and is more than a chance of continuing to impress through the 2014 Darwin Cup via the central barrier 7. A proven performer against many of his Darwin Cup rivals, the Akhadan gelding pipped Cantonese on the line in the Chief Minister’s Cup (1600m) on July 12th before running an unlucky second in the Buntine Handicap (1900m) last time out. Capable of success on the Fannie Bay course, Smarty Mac offers great value as a fold in a trifecta for the 2014 Darwin Cup.
Carrying impressive form of two wins and two second place finishes from his last four starts into the 2014 Darwin Cup, Gravitational won the NT Derby over course and distance last time out, and is a great chance of continuing his winning ways this afternoon from barrier 4. Beginning his racing career under the guidance of trainer Danny O’Brien, the Astronomer Royal gelding has performed to a high standard over his current preparation, having finished third in the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (2000m) and contested the Group 1 SA Derby (2500m) prior to his four most recent results. Confirmed for the partnered by renowned jockey Dom Tourneur in the Darwin Cup, all signs point towards another competitive performance from Gravitational this afternoon.
