Nineteen runners have been included in nominations for the 2016 Darwin Cup (2000m); to be run at Fanny Bay Racecourse on Monday, August 1st.
Local trainer Gary Clarke is poised to launch a typically smart attack on the 2016 Darwin Cup after confirming a total of four runners in nominations, including Finke and Lightinthenite.
Finke is undoubtedly the formed horse of Northern Territory racing at current, and has not tasted anything but success through eight starts in 2016 so far.
Returning for a freshen-up for success in the Darwin Guineas (1600m) on July 2nd, the Turffontein gelding repeated the dose in the Northern Territory Derby (2000m) on July 16th and is subsequently offered a rare opportunity to claim the Triple Crown with a win in the Darwin Cup.
A proven performer at the course, distance and class, Lightinthenite is the reigning Darwin Cup champion and is a leading chance of defending his crown in 2016.
Trialling well in the lead-up to his racing return, the Galileo gelding ran a smart fourth in the Chief Minister’s Cup (1600m) first-up on July 9th and is sure to have taken plenty of benefit from the run.
Lloyd Kennewell has been pleased with the form and class displayed by Abu Dhabi this time, and has included the talented gelding in 2016 Darwin Cup nominations.
Posting three wins and a further six minors through fifteen career starts so far, Abu Dhabi returned from a freshen-up for fourth in the Australian Made Handicap (1300m) on the Morphettville Parks circuit on May 28th.
Running second in the RSL Trobis Handicap (1300m) in his first appearance in Darwin on June 16th, the I Am Invincible gelding has since run second to Finke in each of the Darwin Guineas and Northern Territory Derby.
Victorian galloper Canny Ballad has been held on the country circuit this year and should carry benefit into the Darwin Cup.
Claiming five wins and a further eleven minors through thirty-seven career starts, the Dream Ballad gelding placed fourth in an Oakbank minor over 1400m first-up on March 26th; progressing to seventh in the McAlister Painters BM80 (1400m) at Murray Bridge.
Having placed fifth in the Chief Minister’s Cup upon arriving in Darwin, Canny Ballad ran sixth in the Million Dollar Fish Buntine (1900m) on July 16th.
The 2016 Darwin Cup field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, July 28th 2016.
