Eleven runners remain in contention for this afternoon’s 2016 Darwin Cup (2000m) at Fannie Bay Racecourse; offering punters exceptional value from a betting standpoint and several key opportunities to place a winning wager.
In-form local Finke remains an outright $3.80 favourite in 2016 Darwin Cup betting markets with Ladbrokes.com.au, ahead of reigning champion Lightinthenite ($4.20) and Saturday Sorcerer ($5).
Will Finke justify favouritism and win the 2016 Darwin Cup, or will one of his talented rivals post an upset?
Finke has undoubtedly been the standout performer of Northern Territory racing this year, is in career-best form and should prove particularly difficult to beat in the 2016 Darwin Cup with only 54.5kgs in tow. Posting six-consecutive race wins upon transferring to the care of Gary Clarke at the beginning of the year, the Turffontein gelding returned this time for success in the Darwin Guineas (1600m) on July 2nd before repeating the dose in the Ladbrokes NT Derby (2000m) last time out on July 16th. Finke is offered a rare opportunity to complete the Northern Territory Triple Crown this afternoon and represents terrific value at current Darwin Cup odds.
Our Valdivia ($6)
Our Valdivia carries excellent form into the 2016 Darwin Cup, will relish a step up in distance and arguably offers punters the best value for money at current $6 odds for success or $2.10 to finish in the first three. Our Valdivia began his career under the care of Mike Moroney, but was sold and transferred to Lisa Lefoe’s base at Alice Springs earlier this year and has taken well to NT racing. Returning to winning form in the Hot 100 Friends Handicap (1600m) on July 2nd, the Don Eduardo gelding repeated the dose in the Bridge Toyota Cup (1600m) on July 13th before taking out the key form-indicating Metric Mile (1600m) on July 23rd. Our Valdivia could very well receive the run of the race from barrier 3 and has been charged with carrying only 55kgs in the Darwin Cup.
Lightinthenite is a proven performer at the course, distance and class and should prove extremely tough to beat in the 2016 Darwin Cup if he can overcome a race-high 63kgs. Winning each of the Chief Minister’s Cup (1600m) and Darwin Cup during an impressive 2015 campaign, the Galileo gelding is sure to have taken plenty of benefit from his first-up run for fourth time in the Chief Minister’s Cup and should also receive a good run in transit from barrier 5.
